A Novel Inspired by Tragedy – And Filled With Hope

The moment will stay with me forever. Its impact will never be diminished.

I was watching Rethink Afghanistan, a film being presented at the M.U.C.K. Film Festival in August of 2009, when a minute-long clip pushed me back into my seat like the G-forces on an astronaut at liftoff. It sucked the breath out of my lungs.

It was the moment that inspired me to write One Child.

The story behind the child was heartbreaking and tragic. War had consumed her land and devastated her family. They were living in a displaced persons camp with no food and little shelter from the harsh, wet weather. She was an innocent victim of horrible circumstances.

I wanted to learn more and started talking to men and women from Afghanistan, to soldiers who had served in and around Kandahar, and to aid workers who had spent time on the ground trying to rebuild the country.

What I wanted to write began to take shape. But right from the start I knew this book was destined to be more than a simple thriller. As always, my goal was to weave an entertaining tale, but this time I wanted to immerse the reader in the story like never before.

I surrounded myself with a creative team and things began to gel. We explored ways of bringing this book to life, not only for the entertainment value, but to deliver a powerful and relevant message. To expose life in Afghanistan through the eyes of a soldier, an embedded reporter, and a destitute Afghan family. To give the reader a true taste of what Afghanistan is all about.

Keeping true to my thriller instincts, this book is an engrossing page-turner. I can’t seem to write a book without slipping in some action and suspense.

But what will really make One Child stand out in an immense sea of thriller novels to hit the market this year is the way it unfolds. Each day more chapters will be unlocked and the wall will display a new way to discover links to places, corporations and characters.

Check it out. Look for new ways to interact with the book. Uncover a new way to experience a story.

Welcome – to where the world of publishing is heading.

Welcome – to One Child.
